Bengal man arrested in connection with $235M WazirX crypto heist
Delhi Police have arrested a suspect from West Bengal in connection with a $235 million hack of the WazirX cryptocurrency exchange. The breach was executed through deceptive practices involving a fake account sold via Telegram, rather than through weaknesses in WazirX's internal systems. WazirX cooperated with the investigation by providing necessary hardware and transaction logs. An independent review confirmed the integrity of WazirX's security measures. However, challenges arose during the investigation due to delays from third-party services managing the exchange's digital assets. The chargesheet revealed that the hackers accessed WazirX’s multisignature wallet and stole crypto tokens valued at $235 million. A digital custody partner, Liminal, has been blamed for the breach, though they countered that WazirX retained significant assets on its platform long after the incident. A WazirX spokesperson stated the exchange is in the process of transferring remaining assets to new wallets.
