Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) is initiating plans to establish a strategic reserve comprising major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ether, and BNB. This move aims to enhance the region’s economic resilience and capitalize on opportunities from Bitcoin mining. The GMC administration announced their plan and is set to engage in discussions with senior Bhutan government officials and global industry leaders by March 2025. Unlike other jurisdictions pursuing Bitcoin-only reserves, GMC plans to hold various established digital assets with significant market capitalization and liquidity to facilitate easier trading. The city is projected to take 21 years to complete and is envisioned as an economic corridor linking South Asia to Southeast Asia. Currently, Bhutan holds approximately 11,688 BTC valued at around $1.12 billion, alongside other cryptocurrencies, accumulated through investments and local mining operations since 2019, indicating a longstanding interest in digital assets.
