Bhutan’s Special Administrative Region to Adopt Bitcoin, Ethereum in Strategic Reserves
Bhutan's newly designated Special Administrative Region (SAR), Gelephu Mindfulness City, has announced plans to adopt digital assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Binance’s BNB token as part of its strategic reserves. This initiative aims to create a sustainable and innovative urban environment. The move builds upon Bhutan's significant role in cryptocurrency investment, having mined over 13,000 Bitcoin since 2019 through its state investment arm, Druk Holding & Investments. This positions Bhutan among the largest governmental holders of Bitcoin globally, surpassing even El Salvador. The SAR intends to focus on assets with high market capitalization and strong liquidity to ensure financial resilience. The region plans to host a global summit in March to discuss the integration of digital assets into strategic reserves, complementing Bhutan's regulatory framework established by the 'Application of Laws Act 2024.' Other jurisdictions are also exploring similar strategies with Bitcoin as part of their national financial systems.
