Bitcoin hashrate taps all-time high
Bitcoin’s hashrate hit a record of over 1,000 exahashes per second (EH/s) on January 3, 2025, nearly double the rate from a year earlier. Despite a retracement to about 780 EH/s at the time of reporting, this rise signifies increased mining activity and enhanced network security. Bitcoin miners are expanding operations despite the April 2024 halving, which reduced block rewards from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC. Miners have focused on accumulating BTC on their balance sheets, with significant stock performances noted for companies like MicroStrategy. Institutional investments in Bitcoin, particularly through ETFs, saw a surge, with expectations for greater allocations from large investors. Analysts forecast regulatory clarity in the U.S. could lead to accelerated institutional participation in Bitcoin in 2025.
