Bitcoiners donated $270K to fund Ross Ulbricht’s ‘personal expenses‘
Supporters of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the Silk Road, have donated over $270,000 in Bitcoin to a campaign aimed at assisting his reintegration into society after more than 11 years in prison. The donations were facilitated through a Bitcoin wallet associated with the Free Ross campaign, which has been created to support Ulbricht's transition following his presidential pardon by Donald Trump on January 21, 2025. In addition to Bitcoin, the campaign received donations in Ether, Solana, Cardano, and smaller amounts of other cryptocurrencies. Prior to his release, the Free Ross project focused on raising funds for Ulbricht's legal defense and criminal justice reform. Following his incarceration for creating the Silk Road darknet marketplace, Ulbricht was sentenced to life without parole in 2015. As of now, his financial situation remains unclear, and while much of the Silk Road's crypto holdings have been seized, there are discussions suggesting that he could potentially have access to up to $47 million in Bitcoin. Interviews with Ulbricht have been conducted for an upcoming documentary about his life.
