Heather 'Razzlekhan' Morgan has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in laundering funds from the 2016 Bitfinex hack, which resulted in the theft of nearly 120,000 bitcoins valued at approximately $9 billion. Her husband, Ilya 'Dutch' Lichtenstein, who orchestrated the hack, received a five-year sentence just a week prior. The couple laundered as much as a fifth of the stolen bitcoin through various sophisticated methods, including using darknet markets, cryptocurrency mixing services, and establishing U.S. business banking accounts to attempt to legitimize their gains. At her sentencing, Morgan expressed deep regret for her actions, stating that she used her time and energy to harm rather than help others. Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly described Morgan's actions as part of a deliberate and extensive planning process, emphasizing the seriousness of the offenses. Morgan pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering conspiracy and one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States, while asserting she was unaware of the theft until it had occurred.
