Ilya Lichtenstein, involved in the 2016 hack of the Bitfinex exchange, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering. The sentencing occurred on November 14, 2024, in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, where Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly imposed the sentence, despite guidelines permitting up to 20 years. Prosecutors recommended a lighter sentence due to Lichtenstein's lack of prior offenses and substantial cooperation in other investigations. Along with his wife, Heather Morgan, they were arrested in February 2022 after allegedly laundering approximately 95,000 BTC stolen from Bitfinex. Morgan, who also faces charges and has pleaded guilty, will be sentenced on November 18, and it is suggested that her sentence may not exceed her husband's.
