The rise of deep fakes and bots has prompted various projects to find effective solutions to distinguish real accounts from the fake ones, especially on platforms like X and Facebook. Many online games are infiltrated by bots used to exploit crypto airdrops. A study from the University of Waterloo found that only 61% of participants could successfully identify genuine versus AI-generated images, indicating that humans struggle to discern fakes. Holonym, a blockchain-based digital identity platform, aims to combat this issue using 'human keys' derived from biometric data to separate real users from imposters. This technology not only addresses online identity verification but also has applications in political fundraising, evidenced by its implementation in Andrew Yang’s 2020 campaign to allow anonymous donations while confirming donor eligibility. Holonym is also working on assisting refugees to establish their identities and access vital services, showcasing the broader potential of digital IDs in today's digital landscape.
