BlueSky Sees Surge in New Users and Child Pornography
BlueSky, the decentralized social media platform, has experienced a significant rise in users, leading to a corresponding increase in harmful content, including child sexual abuse material. This surge in activity has compelled the platform to enhance its moderation efforts. The increase followed President-elect Donald Trump's recent victory, prompting many users to migrate from X (formerly Twitter). Since then, BlueSky has recorded over 42,000 reports of harmful content in just 24 hours, as compared to 360,000 reports throughout all of 2023. BlueSky has acknowledged instances of over-enforcement of its content moderation policies, resulting in account suspensions, although many affected users can appeal. To combat harmful content, BlueSky has partnered with Thorn, an organization focused on child protection, to utilize AI technologies for identifying and removing inappropriate material.
