Gaming technology startup Improbable has unveiled plans to create a layer-1 blockchain named Somnia, which aims to revolutionize blockchain scalability with the promise of over 400,000 transactions per second. According to Improbable’s founder, Herman Narula, this breakthrough has been achieved by leveraging their extensive experience in gaming and distributed systems. The Somnia blockchain is expected to be compatible with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and will utilize a new technology called ICEdb to enhance data reading and writing speeds. Initial testing indicates it can handle hundreds of thousands of transactions per second with reduced bandwidth requirements. The project, initiated by the Virtual Society Foundation in association with metaverse ecosystem MSquared, emphasizes applications in gaming, social platforms, and decentralized finance, while also aiming to provide a broader range of use cases in the future. Despite its initial focus, the creators remain open to discovering new possibilities that this technology could enable.
