Improbable, the developer behind Bored Apes' Otherside, has announced the development of a new layer-1 blockchain named Somnia, which aims to process over 400,000 transactions per second. The project is set to launch in devnet soon. Improbable founder Herman Narula asserts that Somnia has solved the scalability challenges of blockchain technology, leveraging the company's expertise in gaming and distributed systems. This EVM-compatible blockchain will utilize its proprietary ICEdb technology, which promises ultra-fast read/write times and advanced data compression capabilities, enhancing transaction efficiency significantly. Early tests with 100 validators indicated that Somnia could handle a substantial number of transactions simultaneously. Initially focused on gaming, metaverse, and social applications, Somnia aims to support a broader range of use cases in the future. The project is also backed by the Virtual Society Foundation, which aims to facilitate the creation of decentralized businesses in the gaming sector. Improbable, backed by Softbank and known for its association with Yuga Labs, is looking to integrate its blockchain technology into mass consumer applications.
