Canada PM frontrunner once vowed to make the country a ‘crypto capital’
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation has shifted focus to Pierre Poilievre, the opposition leader and potential successor, who has been a vocal advocate for cryptocurrency. In a March 2022 campaign event, Poilievre proposed transforming Canada into the 'crypto capital' and criticized the existing central banking system and crypto regulations. His remarks included the idea that Bitcoin could allow Canadians to 'opt out' of traditional financial systems. Following a severe downturn in the crypto market in 2023, Poilievre faced scrutiny for these comments. Recent polls indicate he is significantly ahead of the ruling Liberals in popularity, with a high probability of winning a majority government. Poilievre has consistently supported pro-crypto initiatives, including opposing central bank digital currencies and promoting cash usage. Trudeau announced his departure as Liberal leader on January 6, with a leadership successor expected to be identified by March 24, ahead of a federal election set for October 20, 2025.
