CFTC Chair Rostin Behnam to Resign as Regulator Exodus Continues Ahead of Trump's Return
Rostin Behnam, the Chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), has announced his resignation effective January 20, the same day President-elect Donald Trump will take office. Behnam intends to leave the Commission officially by February 7. His departure follows a trend of crypto-skeptic regulators stepping down to avoid clashes with the incoming Trump administration, which is expected to appoint more pro-crypto officials. Behnam did not specify his reasons for resigning but highlighted the resilience of financial markets during his tenure. As CFTC Chair, he pushed for the Commission to become the primary regulator for the cryptocurrency sector, advocating for stricter regulations on crypto futures and exchange-traded products. Trump's potential replacements for Behnam include current Republican Commissioners Summer Mersinger or Caroline Pham. Behnam joins other Biden-appointed regulators who are leaving ahead of Trump's inauguration.
