China denies involvement after ‘major’ breach of US Treasury workstations
The Chinese government has denied involvement after a breach occurred at the US Treasury, which allowed unauthorized access to certain unclassified documents. This incident was reported to lawmakers in a letter on December 30, 2024, where US Treasury officials indicated the breach was linked to a Chinese state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actor. The breach was first identified by third-party software provider BeyondTrust on December 2, with a notification sent to impacted customers shortly after confirming unusual activity. According to Treasury Assistant Secretary Aditi Hardikar, the despite the incident, there is no evidence of continued access to Treasury systems. Treasury officials are collaborating with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and forensic experts to investigate the breach further. This incident follows a trend in increasing cyber activity, including a notable hack called the Salt Typhoon breach, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by government and financial institutions.
