Crypto.com announced that it will introduce a Mastercard-powered prepaid payments card in Bahrain starting January 2025. This development follows Mastercard's issuance of a license to Crypto.com to operate within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. The cards will cater to users across all five tiers of Crypto.com's card offerings, providing rewards up to 8% on spending. Cardholders will be able to fund their accounts using the Crypto.com app with various payment methods. While some users expressed concerns over the impact of this new partnership on existing Visa-backed cards, it was clarified that the Mastercard cards would merely replace unavailable offerings in the GCC region. Additionally, Mastercard noted plans to expand this partnership beyond Bahrain to other GCC territories such as Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. This partnership symbolizes a positive step towards enhancing cryptocurrency adoption in a region recognized for its progressive stance on blockchain technologies.
