Crypto scammers hard shift to Telegram, and ‘it’s working’
Crypto scammers have significantly shifted to Telegram for conducting malware scams, leading to a 2,000% increase since November. According to Scam Sniffer, these scams now surpass traditional phishing attacks. The tactics have evolved beyond simple wallet connection schemes, shifting towards distributing sophisticated malware through fake verification bots in fraudulent trading, airdrop, and alpha groups. Once users run the malware or install counterfeit verification software, attackers gain access to sensitive data such as passwords and wallet files. Scam Sniffer highlighted the emergence of at least two fake verification bots, namely OfficiaISafeguardRobot and SafeguardsAuthenticationBot. The security firm noted that as users become more aware of standard scams, attackers have adapted by using covert social engineering tactics via these Telegram bots. This shift indicates a more intricate attack strategy, resulting in losses that are challenging to quantify, yet clearly effective for the scammers. Additionally, a report indicated that scam-related cryptocurrency theft reached $29 million in December alone, marking a significant uptick in incidents compared to previous years.
