Crypto's U.S. Senate Ally Lummis Pushes Federal Agencies on Digital Assets Issues
Senator Cynthia Lummis has recently criticized two federal agencies regarding their handling of digital assets. In a letter sent to the U.S. Marshals Office, Lummis urged them to slow down the liquidation of seized bitcoin from the Silk Road case, claiming that the aggressive sale of approximately 70,000 bitcoins is inappropriate, particularly during the transition to a new administration that may favor a U.S. bitcoin strategic reserve. Additionally, she addressed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), warning against the potential destruction of evidence related to their guidance to banks on digital asset clients, suggesting that such actions would be illegal. Lummis's statements come as she prepares to lead a new Senate Banking Committee subcommittee focused on digital assets, alongside Senator Tim Scott. They aim to create a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies while facing opposition from Democratic members, particularly Senator Elizabeth Warren.
