Starting in mid-2025, Detroit will allow residents to pay taxes and fees using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum through a PayPal-managed service. This initiative aims to position Detroit as a tech-friendly city and stimulate economic growth, particularly benefiting residents with limited access to traditional banking. Mayor Mike Duggan emphasized the importance of building a technology-friendly environment that empowers local entrepreneurs. To mitigate risks associated with cryptocurrency price volatility, payments will be converted into U.S. dollars before reaching city accounts. This move aligns with similar initiatives in other states like Colorado and Utah, where digital currencies are accepted for public services. Detroit is also encouraging blockchain innovators to suggest applications that enhance transparency and efficiency within city operations, indicating a commitment to exploring new tech opportunities.
