Do Kwon's U.S. Extradition Gets Okay From Montenegro's Justice Minister
Montenegro's Justice Minister, Bojan Božović, has approved the extradition of Terraform founder Do Kwon to the U.S. instead of South Korea, following a ruling from the country's Supreme Court. The U.S. and South Korea had both sought Kwon's extradition due to his involvement in the collapse of the Terra/Luna algorithmic stablecoin in 2022, which led to significant impacts in the crypto market. Kwon was previously sentenced in March 2023 for passport forgery and has been contesting his extradition for over a year. After evaluating various factors including the severity of the crimes and the order of extradition requests, the Justice Minister stated that the U.S. met the necessary criteria. This follows an August ruling by Montenegro's Appellate Court favoring South Korea's extradition request. Additionally, the legal repercussions of the Terra incident continue to affect multiple parties, as the SEC recently took action against a subsidiary of Jump Crypto for security violations related to the LUNA token.
