DOJ Seeks Seizure of $16 Million in FTX-Linked Crypto Following Year-Long Probe
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a civil forfeiture complaint to seize approximately $16 million in cryptocurrency held in a Binance account, following a year-long investigation. The funds are linked to alleged bribes authorized by Sam Bankman-Fried, with the account containing various tokens including Internet Computer (ICP), Avalanche (AVAX), Ripple (XRP), Cardano (ADA), and Solana (SOL). Notably, Solana tokens accounted for about $8.5 million, and their value has reportedly doubled since the initial transfers. This case dates back to a November 2021 incident where Bankman-Fried reportedly directed a $40 million transfer from an Alameda Research wallet as part of a bribery attempt to unfreeze roughly $1 billion in crypto held on Chinese exchanges. The investigation has revealed suspicious transaction patterns, including frequent deposits of stablecoins and Bitcoin converted to other cryptocurrencies. This development comes after Bankman-Fried's conviction on multiple criminal charges, with ongoing legal appeals regarding his case.
