Emory University has disclosed more than $15 million worth of shares in Grayscale's Bitcoin Mini Trust, marking it as the first university endowment to publicly invest in a bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF). Additionally, the university holds 4,312 shares of Coinbase, valued at approximately $922,639. With total assets of $21 billion as of August 2023, Emory's move is notable given that endowments traditionally prefer a risk-averse investment strategy. Despite this, no other endowment has reported exposure to bitcoin ETFs until now. The announcement, made in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, highlights increasing institutional interest in cryptocurrencies. Grayscale's mini fund, despite launching later than others in the market, has seen success, managing about $2.3 billion in bitcoin assets. This development aligns with recent trends where pension funds have also begun allocating assets into bitcoin ETFs, signaling a shift in institutional investment behavior.
