Ethereum was the highest-earning blockchain in 2024, collecting $2.48 billion in fees, a 3% increase from 2023. This growth occurred despite the Dencun upgrade in March, which aimed to reduce Layer 2 transaction costs and facilitate user migration from the Layer 1 chain. Following Ethereum was Tron with $2.15 billion and Bitcoin at $922 million in fee earnings. CoinGecko revealed that Ethereum earned $1.17 billion in Q1 2024, nearly half of its total yearly earnings, driven by increased onchain activity and airdrop programs. Despite the strong fee earnings, the price of Ether did not meet expectations in 2024. Other blockchains also saw growth, with Tron experiencing a 116.7% increase and Bitcoin showing a 16% rise in fee earnings. Solana reported the most significant growth in its fee earnings, surging by 2,838% due to the popularity of memecoins. The data reviewed covered gas fees from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024.
