Cybersecurity firm CertiK reported that the number of crypto hacks and exploits increased to 303 incidents in 2024, up from 282 in 2023. The crypto exchange OKX has alerted users about fraudulent browser extensions posing as OKX plugins on the Firefox store. OKX clarified that they have not released any Firefox plugins and advised users who may have downloaded these extensions to move their funds from connected wallets. The company has reached out to Firefox to remove these malicious applications, warning users against downloading any OKX-specific software from third-party sources. Phishing scams accounted for significant losses in 2024, with CertiK highlighting that attacks in 296 campaigns cost crypto users over $1 billion, marking a 21% rise from 2023. Additionally, a malware called SpyAgent, disguised as legitimate Android apps, was detected by McAfee, capable of stealing sensitive information from devices. Decentraland also experienced a breach, where its social media account was compromised to promote a fake cryptocurrency airdrop, resulting in drained funds for those who participated.
