Juan Tacuri was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a federal court in New York for his role in a cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme known as Forcount, later rebranded as Weltsys. The scheme, which targeted Spanish-speaking communities from 2018 to 2021, promised guaranteed profits from cryptocurrency investments but instead swindled millions from victims worldwide. Tacuri, portrayed as a wealthy promoter, convinced many through community events and flashy presentations. Victims could not withdraw their funds and suffered total losses, culminating in the collapse of the scheme in 2021. Tacuri was ordered to forfeit over $3.6 million in illicit gains and pay restitution of the same amount. This case echoes similar fraudulent operations in the cryptocurrency space, highlighting a growing trend of Ponzi schemes that exploit investors.
