The Lightning Network was initially heralded as a game-changer for Bitcoin, enabling swift and low-cost transactions by allowing users to open payment channels, thereby reducing confirmation times significantly. However, interest has waned since its peak, particularly after its prominent role during El Salvador's bitcoin adoption in 2021 via the government Chivo app. While the amount of bitcoin in Lightning channels surged from under 2,400 BTC to 3,300 BTC initially, growth has stagnated, with around 5,000 BTC currently in use. The early days of Lightning were marked by exciting experimental apps, such as Pollo.feed, allowing users to feed live chickens remotely and Satoshi’s World, which let users graffiti Google Earth. Though Bitcoin's severity in recent times is acknowledged, there is a nostalgia for the creativity and fun that accompanied its earlier use on the Lightning Network.
