Google to require FCA registration for crypto ads targeting the UK
Google has announced that starting January 15, 2025, advertisers seeking to promote crypto exchanges and software wallets in the United Kingdom must be registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This policy aims to ensure that ads for digital asset exchanges and wallets comply with local regulations. Google will also allow advertisements for hardware wallets, provided they do not offer additional services such as buying, selling, or trading cryptocurrencies. Advertisers must ensure compliance with local laws in all regions where their ads are displayed. This update comes amid ongoing regulatory efforts to combat unauthorized crypto promotions, including the FCA's warning against a non-registered memecoin project in the UK. The SEC in Nigeria has also mandated that virtual asset service providers obtain permission to advertise crypto products. The shift reflects growing scrutiny over crypto advertising practices, highlighting the importance of regulatory compliance in financial promotions.
