Gustavo Rodriguez, a promoter of the cryptocurrency firm IcomTech, has received a delay in his sentencing after being convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Initially set for sentencing, Rodriguez will now testify under oath on October 25, 2024, in a New York courtroom. His lawyers requested an evidentiary hearing, stating that Rodriguez wished to provide testimony relevant to his case. Alongside his colleague David Brend, Rodriguez faced charges in a case that described IcomTech as a Ponzi scheme, which allegedly defrauded users of more than $8 million between 2018 and 2019. David Carmona, the project's founder, pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy in December 2023. Rodriguez and Brend opted for a trial where they were found guilty of wire fraud conspiracy. Sentencing for both is set for this fall, with Rodriguez facing a potential maximum of 20 years in prison, while Brend could receive 17.5 years. Prosecutors are pushing for a lengthy sentence, arguing that the actions of both men devastated numerous victims.
