Judge sentences IcomTech promoter to 8 years to deter ‘crypto frauds’
Gustavo Rodriguez, the promoter of the cryptocurrency mining and trading firm IcomTech, was sentenced to eight years in prison by Judge Jennifer Rochon in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. The sentencing followed Rodriguez's conviction for conspiracy to commit wire fraud. During the hearing, Judge Rochon cited Rodriguez's involvement in providing false statements and enhancing the sentence due to his lack of remorse, calling him a creator of the fraudulent operations. Rodriguez's case is part of a broader scrutiny of crypto-related crimes, as the Southern District has seen a significant number of cases involving such allegations. This includes high-profile cases like that of FTX and former Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky. Earlier in January 2024, Marco Ochoa, the former CEO of IcomTech, received a five-year sentence after taking a guilty plea on similar charges. The emphasis on strong penalties appears to be a strategy to deter ongoing and future crypto frauds.
