Landmark Study Reveals New Benefits and Risks of Obesity Drugs Like Ozempic
A new study published in Nature Medicine by the Department of Veterans Affairs shows that weight-loss medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro can help reduce the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and liver cancer, in addition to aiding weight loss. The research analyzed nearly 2 million medical records and indicated that these medications could lower the risk of heart attacks by 9% and dementia by 8%. However, risks associated with these drugs include gastrointestinal issues, arthritis, kidney problems, and pancreatitis. The study emphasizes the multifaceted health benefits of addressing obesity, highlighting that two in five U.S. adults are affected by obesity with potential for broad health improvements through treatment. There is growing awareness and usage of GLP-1 receptor agonists, with a significant portion of users seeking them primarily for weight loss, although cost remains an obstacle for many.
