Meta has established a multi-year partnership with Reuters to integrate AI chat functionalities across its platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Starting October 25, U.S. users will be able to access real-time news content from Reuters through Meta's AI assistant. This integration allows the AI to link directly to Reuters articles when answering questions about current events. Although specifics about licensing for training Meta's large language model, Llama, remain undisclosed, a Meta spokesperson emphasized that the partnership aims to enhance the user experience regarding current news. This move is a significant shift for Meta, which has largely minimized news content in recent years amid controversies, including the removal of its 'News Tab.' By collaborating with established news outlets like Reuters, Meta aligns with a growing trend where AI companies seek to enhance credibility and address concerns over content usage. This partnership echoes similar agreements made by other AI developers, such as OpenAI, to include reliable news sources in their models, especially in light of ongoing legal challenges within the AI industry.
