Meta’s free speech about-face isn’t what it seems
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Jan. 7 that his company would return to its roots of free expression by ending third-party fact-checking and lifting restrictions on speech in the U.S. However, this commitment appears selective as Meta has been actively blocking links to decentralized social media platforms like Pixelfed and Mastodon, labeling posts as spam and deleting them immediately. This contradictory stance raises questions about Zuckerberg's sincerity, especially with the incoming Trump administration. In other news, Tether has filed a lawsuit against Swan Bitcoin for significant breaches in their joint venture, stemming from a mining operation dispute. Meanwhile, Boerse Stuttgart reported that crypto trading volumes tripled last year, accounting for 25% of its revenues, while concerns about a potential TikTok ban in the U.S. have led to discussions about possibly selling its operations to Elon Musk, who opposes a ban for free speech reasons.
