Missouri lawmakers have been actively trying to pass legislation that would prohibit the use of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). On December 1, Republican Senator Rick Brattin introduced Senate Bill (SB) 194, which aims to bar public entities from accepting CBDCs or engaging in any CBDC testing. The bill also amends the state's Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) to exclude CBDCs from the definition of money. Additionally, the proposal mandates that the state treasurer retains at least 1% of state funds in gold and silver, grants exemptions from state capital gains tax on the sale or exchange of gold and silver, and makes these metals legal tender at their market prices. This legislative effort reflects a growing trend among U.S. states opposing CBDCs, as seen with other similar bills recently introduced in Missouri. These actions coincide with a larger movement across the country against CBDCs, including the passage of related federal legislation.
