Morocco is drafting regulations for the cryptocurrency sector, as announced by Bank Al-Maghrib's governor, Abdellatif Jouahri. The country previously imposed a ban on cryptocurrency activities in 2017 but is now working towards regulatory frameworks, involving stakeholders and support from the World Bank. Jouahri highlighted the importance of considering the national socioeconomic context and the evolving regional and international environment in these regulations. Additionally, Morocco is exploring the role of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) in achieving policy goals such as financial inclusion. The CBDC initiative was launched three years ago, although details remain limited. The focus on regulatory frameworks comes amidst growing interest from various African nations, which are looking to establish their own guidelines for cryptocurrency management.
