OpenAI dodges copyright lawsuit over use of news articles in AI training
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, successfully avoided a copyright lawsuit regarding the use of news articles for training its language model. On November 7, a federal judge in New York dismissed the case filed by Raw Story and AlterNet, citing insufficient evidence of harm. Judge Colleen McMahon emphasized that the plaintiffs would need to present additional evidence to justify their claims of injury, noting that their main issue seemed to stem from the use of their articles without compensation. Although the current lawsuit was dismissed, the news outlets' lawyers expressed confidence in their ability to amend and refile their complaint. This legal challenge follows a series of lawsuits against OpenAI by other media companies, including The New York Times. While OpenAI navigates these legal hurdles, it has been forming partnerships with various news organizations to secure rights for content, enhancing its AI capabilities to provide real-time news responses. Other companies, such as Meta, are also forming similar collaborations with news providers.
