SEC Chair Gary Gensler to step down
Gary Gensler, the Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), will step down and leave the agency entirely on January 20, 2025. This date coincides with the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, who has previously criticized Gensler for his stringent regulation of the cryptocurrency industry. Gensler, recognized for implementing over 100 regulatory actions against crypto companies, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have served, aiming to protect American investors and uphold the integrity of capital markets. Trump's commitment to a more crypto-friendly stance has included a promise to dismiss Gensler as part of his campaign to gain the support of the crypto community. While the President has the authority to appoint the SEC Chair, he cannot compel a Commissioner to resign, highlighting Gensler's decision to leave the agency altogether.
