Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the Silk Road, who was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 2015, expressed hope that President-elect Donald Trump would fulfill his campaign promise by commuting his sentence. In a recent tweet, Ulbricht indicated he could finally see a possibility of freedom following Trump's election victory. Initially sentenced for charges including money laundering and conspiracy to traffic narcotics, Ulbricht was arrested after the Silk Road marketplace was taken offline in 2013. During his previous term from 2017 to 2021, Trump did not act to commute Ulbricht’s sentence despite requests for clemency. Many in the crypto community remain doubtful regarding Trump's commitment to this pledge, recalling that he had previously failed to take action during his presidency. Some advocates continue to call for a pardon since Ulbricht's conviction, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of similar cases in the judicial system.
