Singapore has blocked access to Polymarket, a cryptocurrency-based prediction market, due to concerns over unlicensed gambling. As of January 12, users in Singapore reported being unable to access the site, receiving warnings that state Polymarket is defined as a gambling website and that only state-owned gambling companies are permitted for placing bets. Users may face fines and imprisonment for engaging with unlicensed operators. The Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA) indicated that the law imposes penalties for such activities. Established in 2022, the GRA oversees gambling regulations in Singapore, where more than 3,800 gambling websites have been blocked since 2015. Polymarket has also faced scrutiny elsewhere, including a recent subpoena from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) regarding its operations. Despite regulatory hurdles, Polymarket recorded substantial trading activity in early 2025, with over $431 million in trading volume, particularly around popular events like the Super Bowl Championship.
