Solana founders embrace memecoins, say AI agents overrated
Solana founders, as revealed in a January 3 survey, favor memecoins while criticizing artificial intelligence (AI) agents, with 76% deeming memecoins as mostly good. Some 16% view AI agents as the most overrated sector within Solana, expressing concerns regarding the network's increasing maximum extractable value (MEV) challenges. Should they be unable to continue on Solana, respondents indicated a preference for alternatives like Base or Sui. Solana's total value locked surged from $1.5 billion to nearly $8.5 billion in 2024, attributed to retail traders entering the crypto market via Solana, which also saw memecoins expand from $20 billion to over $120 billion in market capitalization. Solana's memecoin platform, Pump.fun, significantly contributed, with a total volume exceeding $8.5 billion. Meanwhile, AI-related tokens reached about $16 billion in market capitalization. Over 20% of founders cited MEV as the main issue for Solana, as transaction fees nearly tripled in 2024, emphasizing the challenges of prioritizing transactions for users.
