Solana should reintroduce a public mempool, researcher says
Recent discussions on sandwich attacks in Solana have reignited, especially after researcher Ben Coverston highlighted that a top sandwich bot, arsc, is earning millions daily through these tactics. Sandwich attacks involve front-running and back-running trades, causing original traders to suffer worse execution prices. Coverston's proposed solution is to reintroduce a public mempool, which was removed by Jito Labs to combat sandwiching. He argues that while public mempools may increase sandwiching, they could also encourage competition among validators, distributing the profits more fairly across the network and preventing centralization of staked Solana. This proposal marks a significant shift from Solana's recent anti-sandwiching measures, which have struggled against persistent attackers like arsc. The long-term impact of sandwiching on the market remains uncertain, as high-frequency trading strategies similar to sandwiching have not hindered trading volumes in other financial markets.
