Story Protocol helps creators survive AI onslaught with programmable IP
Story Protocol aims to facilitate easy licensing and payment for intellectual property (IP) as generative AI technologies impact content creation. Founder Jason Zhao highlights challenges posed by AI regurgitating news without compensation and cloning artist vocals. Story Protocol's solution is to make IP programmable, akin to how Ethereum revolutionized finance. This platform allows rights holders to register their content and set terms for usage, paid in cryptocurrency yet convertible to local currency for creators. Successful backing includes major investors, and the protocol is currently in beta testing on Ethereum. The goal is to provide a legal and simple framework for AI firms to access and pay for IP, reducing the risk of lawsuits. Story Protocol employs non-fungible tokens (NFTs) using a modified Ethereum standard to automate licensing and enforce contracts. This system allows for micro-payments and tracking of IP usage across collaborations. Further innovations involve integrating AI agents to manage IP agreements, with a focus on authenticity in content verification. Scheduled for mainnet launch in early 2025, Story Protocol aims to reshape the relationship between AI and content creators.
