Thai Authorities Seize 1,000 Bitcoin Miners Following Electricity Theft
Thai authorities have shut down a significant Bitcoin mining operation in the Phanat Nikhom district of Chonburi, which reportedly stole around $3 million worth of electricity. The operation involved approximately 1,000 mining machines that tampered with local electricity meters to divert power exclusively at night, while using legitimate readings during the day to avoid detection. The Crime Suppression Division (CSD), in collaboration with the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), seized 996 mining machines and other equipment from the site. Although the responsible individuals or companies have not been identified yet, legal actions are anticipated. This incident is part of a broader trend of electricity theft by Bitcoin miners in Thailand, where past operations have faced similar legal actions due to large-scale power theft. Despite these issues, Thailand’s role in global Bitcoin mining remains relatively minor compared to major markets such as Kazakhstan, Russia, and the U.S.
