OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever recently stated that the era of AI pre-training is nearing its conclusion, emphasizing the need for researchers to discover new methods to scale machine intelligence. During a lecture at the NeurIPS 2024 conference, he expressed concerns that as computing power improves, the growth of available data for AI model training is stagnating. Sutskever compared data to fossil fuels, indicating a peak in data production and urging the focus to shift to the existing datasets. He outlined that the future developments in AI would involve agentic AI, synthetic data, and inference time computing, which are hoped to culminate in AI superintelligence. With advancements in AI agents capable of independent decision-making, potential applications such as the use of Google's Gemini 2.0 framework may assist in complex tasks, moving AI beyond issues like data hallucinations that arise from reliance on deteriorating datasets.
