Toyota’s AI and Robotics-powered ‘Woven City’ set to open this year
Toyota plans to launch its innovative settlement, Woven City, at the base of Mount Fuji in 2025. Initially, the city will accommodate around 100 residents, comprised mainly of Toyota employees and their families, with an eventual goal of housing approximately 2,000 residents. The living laboratory aims to test and develop new technologies, emphasizing sustainability and advanced robotics. Although meant to be a model for self-driving cars and smart homes, its profitability remains uncertain, as Toyota's chairman Akio Toyoda acknowledged it might not generate revenue. Woven City's CEO, Hajime Kumabe, expressed a desire for the project to become profitable, suggesting that its innovations might integrate into Toyota's automotive production. Phase 1 of construction was completed in October 2024, and a new software platform named Arene, designed to streamline car development, will be deployed this year as part of Toyota's broader projects.
