UK proposes ban on ransomware payments in critical sectors
The UK government has initiated a consultation to consider a nationwide ban on ransomware payments for operators of critical national infrastructure, including the energy and health sectors. The Home Office's proposal aims to strengthen national security by cutting off funds to cybercriminals. UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis highlighted the need to deter ransomware attacks that threaten essential services and economic stability. As part of the proposals, the government seeks to block payments to known criminal groups, establish a reporting regime for ransomware incidents, and offer advice to victims. The consultation period will conclude on April 8. Previous cyberattacks on UK institutions, including the Royal Mail and health service software providers, demonstrate the urgency of addressing the ransomware threat, which continues to disrupt public services and pose significant risks to the economy.
