US accounts for over 40% of global Bitcoin hashrate
The United States accounted for over 40% of the global Bitcoin hashrate at the end of 2024, with the major contributions from two mining pools: Foundry USA and MARA Pool, which together accounted for over 38.5% of all blocks mined. Foundry USA experienced significant growth, increasing its hashrate from 157 EH/s at the beginning of 2024 to around 280 EH/s by December, making it the largest mining pool, controlling approximately 36.5% of the total hashrate. In contrast, MARA Pool managed about 32 EH/s or 4.35% of the total hash power. Despite these increases, Chinese mining pools continue to influence the global hashrate considerably, as some miners in China utilize VPNs and other tools to work around regulatory restrictions. This concentration of computing power raises concerns among industry leaders regarding decentralization, with calls for a more distributed mining infrastructure to mitigate risks associated with excessive centralization in one jurisdiction.
