WonderFi CEO kidnapped and forced to pay $1M ransom
Dean Skurka, the CEO of Toronto-based crypto firm WonderFi Technologies, was reportedly kidnapped on November 6 and forced to pay a $1 million ransom for his release. During rush hour in downtown Toronto, Skurka was forcibly taken and made an electronic transfer to secure his freedom. He later confirmed via email that he is now safe and that company funds and data were not affected by the incident. The police continue to investigate the matter, but details remain scarce. This incident is part of a disturbing trend involving kidnappings targeting crypto executives and influencers for monetary gain. Notably, four suspects related to a separate Bitcoin theft were arrested in Kyiv earlier this year, and a group of Malaysian nationals was charged with demanding a ransom in stablecoin. WonderFi, a prominent public-listed crypto firm backed by Kevin O'Leary, holds a significant market cap and manages substantial assets under custody. The firm operates various crypto-related businesses, including Coinsquare and Bitbuy.
