The semi-autonomous region of Zanzibar in Tanzania has launched a National Blockchain Sandbox to spur tech startup development. This initiative allows developers to test innovative technologies on the National Blockchain Network, prioritizing projects that enhance financial inclusion, identity verification, and certification issuance. The sandbox, designed by Dubai-based LedgerFi IT, will operate on the EVM-compatible layer-1 XDC network and offers participants access to government-sponsored training, incubator programs, and mentorship from industry leaders. This move follows a regulatory framework for fintech sandboxes introduced by the Bank of Tanzania, supporting the growing tech landscape. In 2023, mobile money services reached 72% of Tanzanian adults, while only 22% used commercial banks, indicating a significant opportunity for financial technology advancement. Despite past warnings against cryptocurrency trading, there remains a notable interest in crypto investments, with 1.7% of adults reportedly investing by 2023. Zanzibar's independence in regulatory decisions enhances its appeal as a tech innovation hub in East Africa.
