Juan Tacuri, a senior promoter of the Forcount Ponzi scheme rebranded to Weltsys, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. This sentence was handed down by Judge Analisa Torres in the Southern District of New York, where Tacuri was also ordered to pay over $3.6 million in restitution. The fraudulent scheme reportedly defrauded investors of $8.4 million, primarily targeting Spanish-speaking communities worldwide. U.S. prosecutors stated that Tacuri hosted lavish events to promote Forcount, presenting the fictitious firm as a cryptocurrency mining and trading company, and promised significant returns on investments without any legitimate operations. Victims began reporting issues with withdrawals in 2018, and the perpetrators ceased communication by 2021. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams emphasized the severity of the crime, calling it a classic Ponzi scheme and a stark reminder that fraud ultimately does not pay.
