Ethereum's New Layer-2 Network for Gaming: Immutable zkEVM Debuts
Immutable's latest innovation offers a glimpse into the future of gaming
Immutable, a prominent name in the Ethereum scaling and gaming sphere, has recently launched its new Ethereum layer-2 network, Immutable zkEVM. This network, developed in collaboration with Polygon using zkEVM technology, signifies a pivotal step in the evolution of Web3 gaming. Currently in its "early access" phase, Immutable zkEVM is a specialized platform for game developers, offering a unique blend of technology and opportunity to innovate in the gaming sector.
This early access period is limited, with only a select group of approved developers able to build on the network at present. However, Immutable has plans to extend access to all developers in 2024, though official dates are yet to be confirmed. Meanwhile, a testnet version is available for game studios to explore and conduct trials.
Michael Powell, Head of Product Marketing at Immutable, emphasized that the launch of Immutable zkEVM is a critical milestone in the company's mission to enhance the Web3 gaming experience. This platform is designed to benefit game studios and developers by providing gas-free transactions for players, integrating turnkey products, and offering secure and smart contract templates. The primary goal is to simplify the game development process and enhance player experiences.
Immutable plans to launch several games on this new network, including the action role-playing game Guild of Guardians and the strategy game Shardbound, both set for release in the first half of 2024. Additionally, MetalCore, a mech-battling action game, is also slated to launch on Immutable zkEVM within the same timeframe.
Matt Candler, CEO of Studio369, the developer behind MetalCore, shared his enthusiasm for the new platform, highlighting its potential to incorporate more features and leverage the collective efforts of the Ethereum ecosystem. This aligns with Immutable's goal to create a holistic gaming ecosystem that benefits players, studios, and developers.
Immutable zkEVM was initially announced in March 2023 as a joint venture between Polygon and Immutable. The collaboration aims to establish a central hub for crypto and NFT games. Immutable's IMX token has notably gained traction in the market, ranking as the most valuable gaming token and showing significant growth over the past year.
