FIFA and Mythical Games are joining forces to launch FIFA Rivals, a free-to-play soccer game powered by blockchain technology. Scheduled for release in the summer of 2025, the game will be available on iOS and Android, offering players the chance to manage soccer clubs and compete in real-time arcade matches.

The game is expected to attract over 100 million players, according to Mythical Games CEO John Linden. He highlights the success of the company’s NFL Rivals, which has already gained over 6 million players from a smaller fan base. FIFA’s vast audience—5 billion tuned into the FIFA World Cup 2022—suggests the potential for massive engagement.

FIFA Rivals will operate on the Mythos blockchain, supported by the Polkadot network. Players will not only enjoy immersive gameplay but also benefit from blockchain’s unique features, such as owning in-game assets and monetizing them through a play-to-earn system.

The game continues the trend of sporting organizations partnering with blockchain studios to offer fans more engaging and interactive experiences. Mythical Games’ earlier success, Blankos Block Party, a social NFT game, has already transitioned to Polkadot, averaging 3 million transactions per month.

This ambitious project is backed by the Mythos Foundation, established in 2022 to onboard gamers and developers into the Web3 ecosystem. The foundation focuses on cross-chain infrastructure, NFT in-game economies, and enhancing esports participation. Mythical Games’ $37 million Series C1 funding in 2023 has fueled these initiatives, including the development of FIFA Rivals.

As FIFA dives deeper into blockchain, FIFA Rivals could redefine fan engagement, merging the worlds of gaming, sports, and Web3 innovation.
